Revisiting a billion-dollar law suit

Carol Highsmith, the Minnehaha alumna featured in Issue 2 of the Talon who presented a billion-dollar lawsuit against Getty Images in 2016, has seen an unremarkable end to her case.

As first reported by PetaPixel, Highsmith’s case was put to an end when a judge sided with Getty Images, dismissing Highsmith’s federal copyright claims.

Highsmith accused Getty of violating copyright claims when her photos were sold by Getty without her permission.

However, the images were public domain images, suggesting to the court that Getty had not violated any copyright claims because the photos were not protected by Highsmith as such.
