Math team competes in first meet of the year

The math team finished third out of seven teams in their first of five meets today at Holy Angels. At a meet, each member of the team participates in two of four individual events: A, B, C and D, which consist of algebra, geometry, trigonometry and precalculus, respectively. The individual events are 12 minute written tests with four questions; each subsequent question becomes more challenging.

To determine placement in the competition, each school compiles a scoring team consisting of eight students, two of whom must be from 9th or 10th grade. Today’s scoring team included seniors Isobel Jones, Min Park, Bennett Pope, Tyler Radtke and Grant Steinkopf, junior Betty Wang and sophomores Alex Cheng and Daniel Stein.

Although only eight students make up the scoring team, other members of the math team participated in two events and worked through the same set of individual problems.

The individual events were followed by a team event, in which the scoring team worked through a set of six problems for 20 minutes.

There are four more math meets scheduled for this school year: Nov. 23 at DeLaSalle, Dec. 14 at Minnehaha, Jan. 25 at Blake and Feb. 8 at St. Paul Academy.
