New Greek class at Minnehaha

At MA, Greek has not been taught for over 100 years – until now.

“It’s something I’ve always hoped I would have time to do here,” said Johanna Beck, who also teaches Latin.

Ten seniors took Greek this year,

“I was thrilled to hear that Greek was going to be a class,” said senior Makai Bates it’s a language that is in line with Latin that I had been studying”.

The Greek language is very similar to Latin, which is why all of Mrs Beck’s students have taken Latin in previous years.

“  It’s a great class to pursue if you continue your Latin studies through junior year, but you do need to have at least taken in order  Latin III, Latin IV, or Latin V,” Bates said.

According to the University of Minnesota College of Continuing and Professional Studies, there is a class that students can earn college credits for while still in high school. This is called College In Schools, or CIS. In this class, they study Ancient Greek grammar, written in the 4th and 5th centuries in  Athens, and also learn how to read the Bible in Greek. Including Minnehaha, there are only 4 High schools in Minnesota offering this CIS Greek class.

According to the University of Minnesota, you must be a junior or senior who has taken at least 3 years of Latin before taking this Greek class.  At Minnehaha, you can currently take 4 languages, including Spanish, Latin, French, and now Greek. 3 of the 4 classes also offer College In Schools (CIS), Spanish, Greek, and Latin are all classes at Minnehaha that can give you college credits while in high school. When taking a language, which is required, you take it for a year to receive a full credit towards college.

Students don’t just take Greek for the language but also for the history. when taking Greek it helps a lot with colleges and what they look into. People might want to take this Greek class because in the future this class will most likely change and is still experimenting with things to do in Greek.

Eligible students who would like to try something new might find this class very interesting because of how much it relates to the Bible and has a deep meaning in history, which is a big part of ancient Greek history.
