Ezra May, tops in hurdles

Have you ever wondered how big of a deal a tenth of a second is in track? For most people, a tenth of a second is a blink of the eye, but for Ezr, it’s improving his times. Ezra is currently ranked number 2 for 110-meter hurdles in the state.

“In the 60 hurdles, I dropped nine-tenths of a second. And then with my opener in the 110 hurdles, I PR by four tenths of a second. So yeah, it’s a thing,” senior Ezra May said. The more races you run, the faster times you’re gonna get. Just because you can’t simulate a race in, like, practice or in the off season, you just have to get out there and run”. May said. Ezra May, a senior at Minnehaha Academy, only runs 60 M hurdles during indoor and separate meets.  He is one of the team captains for Minnehaha Track and Field. He also runs the 110 M hurdles during meets.

His 2025 track and field career consists of 100 M, 200M, 110M hurdles, 300M hurdles, and the high jump.

Mays’ record for 60 M hurdles in 7.970 seconds, ran on March 29th, 2025.,

“We heard how fast he was prior to the season, he more than met those expectations”.  The team captain is always a great role model. He does whatever we ask him to do when he doesn’t play. He works hard. He’s nonchalant,  he’s confident and he knows how good he is, but he also doesn’t feel the need to let everybody else know about it,” Head coach of Track and Field Kris Sauer said.

Training in the off-season can be one of the hardest things to do, especially when you are not in season.

“I do a lot of lifting and I try to sprint about 2 times a week”, May said. He has always been a hurdler.

“I have three older siblings, and they all did hurdles before me, so yeah, I’ve been hurdling ever since I started track”. May said.

Sections are on May 29th.

First-year Turner Hyder said, “He is very good to us underclassmen. He doesn’t make us feel like we are below him. He is a super humble guy who continues to encourage us and help us get better.”

Ezra is committed to MSU Mankato in southern Minnesota.

He plans to study business, and his main focus is track and field.

“I plan to get a lot faster here because that’s what they do. I would also like to beat my record or get closer to it”. May said.
