Minnehaha has a diverse and unique student body from various ethnic backgrounds. Their families have their own cultures and traditions, and a huge part of their culture is culinary. The food people eat, and the cooking process of that food brings people together and helps families grow. The flavor of people’s food does more than just taste, it brings happiness and affects how people live their lives. Elijah Jensen, a sophomore, is Korean and African American, and his family makes a South Korean dessert called Patbingsu. He describes this dessert as “ice, whatever fruits you want, red beans and condensed milk.” Max Krumm, a junior, is from Desserts and dishes around the world Exploring Minnehaha’s diverse culture with food in Moscow, Russia. His family makes a dish called beef stroganoff. Krumm describes this dish as “a Russian dish containing beef and pasta and some sort of sauce of your choice.” Beef stroganoff originated in the 19th century and is now famous around the world. Justin Ma, a sophomore, is from China, and his family makes a dessert called BingTanghulu Candied Hawthorn Stick. He describes this as a “Chinese candied apple.” Ma further describes the treat by saying that “hawthorn is a sour fruit, and you use a stick to combine it with sweet. It’s pretty good. It’s a good combination of sweet and sourness.” Santiago Jeshua Aguirre Millan, a sophomore, is from Mexico. He makes a dish called Tres Leches. He describes the dish by saying, “It’s like cake, then you put milk in it. So it’s like a normal cake except sometimes it can be in a circle, or it can be like a normal cake.” I l liana Rubio Ramirez, a sophomore, is also Mexican, and her family eats a Spanish dish called Arroz con Leche. She describes it as “just like rice pudding. I know it’s Spanish, but it’s very popular in Mexico.” Ramirez said, “My family eats it in the morning.” All these people are from Minnehaha Academy and share the food they make. All these foods are from different countries around the world. Food plays a big part in how people live, have fun, and interact with each other. Food is a piece of culture and it helps shape who people are. It is important to understand how food plays a part in people’s lives to better understand our similarities and differences with each other.
