This morning, Minnehaha’s chemistry department celebrated Mole Day – which honors the mole, an SI unit created by Amedeo Avogadro – with an assortment of mole songs, mole dances and mole treats.

The mole is a basic unit of measurement in chemistry that measures amount of any given substance. Avogadro’s number, 6.02 x 10^23, represents one mole of a substance. For example, if there are 12 apples in a dozen of apples, there are 6.02 x 10^23 apples in a mole of apples.

On the menu for today’s celebration was chocolate molk, cara-mole apple pops, donut moles and Molky Way bars. In addition to thematic foodstuffs, students and teachers exchanged mole jokes (see below) and sang mole songs such as “Happy Mole Day to You.”

Mole Day was observed from 6:02 a.m. to 6:02 p.m. today (6:02 10/23).
