Blockbuster hoops set for January

Boys’ basketball team plans huge event in January

In early January 2020, Minnehaha Academy will be hosting basketball games in which some of the best teams in the country will be playing against each other, including Minnehaha’s own boys’ team.

This tournament will take place on Friday, Jan. 3, and Saturday, Jan. 4, and will include four teams and three games. Friday night, the first game will be Minnehaha Academy vs. Park Center, a Class AAAA school from Brooklyn Park, Minn. In the second game on Friday, The Patrick School from Hillside, NJ, will take on Sierra Canyon School from Chatsworth, Calif.

The main attraction for Redhawks’ fans, however, is the 7 p.m. Saturday game between the Redhawks and the Sierra Canyon Trailblazers, featuring some of the highest-ranked and most recruited high school basketball players in the country, including LeBron James’s son, LeBron “Bronny” James, Jr., and Dwayne Wade’s son, Zaire Wade.

The Redhawks also have some of the top players in the country. “There are a lot of ranking agencies, but in a nutshell, Chet Holmgren is ranked in the top three in his grade, Jalen Suggs is ranked top ten in his grade, and Prince Aligbe is ranked top thirty in his grade,” said Lance Johnson, Redhawks’ basketball coach.

Minnehaha’s starters for the Redhawks aren’t confirmed yet, but seven of the players have received Division 1 scholarship offers.

Tickets will be sold later this month, and Josh Thurow, Minnehaha’s athletic director, expects them to sell out fast. They will be $10 for students and $20 for adults, with a limited number available per buyer. Check @RedhawksAD on Twitter for updates.

“I will have tickets to sell to our students and to the public at large, so we’ll have the opportunity for our students first,” said Thurow. “They want our students to come to the game because they want it to be that atmosphere, like a high school game. I’m hoping everyone at our school will want to come.”

If you can’t make it to the games, they will be on ESPN+.
