Athletes keep busy

Christmas break is no break for athletes, coaches

Minnehaha’s winter sports teams will stay busy over Christmas break, with several tournaments, individual games and practices scheduled. Teams include boys’ and girls’ hockey, boys’ and girls’ basketball and wrestling.

In boys’ basketball, for example, the varsity team has two tournament games on Dec. 28 and 30. They also have one game. The junior varsity has three tournaments and one normal game. The C team has two tournaments and one normal game.

With tournaments, games, trips and practices, some families may have to postpone travel plans, but most aren’t bothered.

“Having practice [during Christmas break] doesn’t ruin anything,” said junior shooting guard Megan Thurow.

The Nordic ski team will take its annual trip to the Adventurous Christians camp in northern Minnesota, but it is not mandatory, though highly recommended.

“I have enjoyed spending both holidays at home,” said freshman Nordic skier Elizabeth Cripe. “But our coach promised us a surprise and we will be back on New Year’s Day.”

“It is where skiers are made,” said Anne Rykken the Nordic ski teams’ head coach.
