Youth fuels alpine team

Posted: December 8, 2013

The Alpine ski team, which includes grades 7-12, will be led this year by coach Brad Schaeppi along with four captains: senior Garrett Oren, juniors Maddy Webster and Gunnar Nelson and sophomore Carrie Sayre. Captains’ practices started a month prior to normal practices.

Nelson, a first time captain, said that being on the team for six years has helped him bond with people he otherwise wouldn’t have be friends with.

“Having a young team leaves more room for development,” said Nelson. “We start young which means we get the maximum amount of training time and grow to be stronger skiers in the future.”

Webster, also a first time captain, said that the captains’ goal for the year is to get the team excited and encourage the younger members to stick with the team. Even though she will not be able to ski this season due to a knee injury, Webster plans on attending all races and many practices to cheer the team on. Webster says she will work hard to come back even stronger for next year.

“I want everyone to have fun doing the activity they love,” she said. “I will do my very best to stay involved and keep the ball rolling. Although this may be difficult, I am up for the challenge.”
