Boys’ hockey: A team on the ice

As a new hockey season approaches, the boys’ hockey team looks to have an improved season from last year, but that’s not the whole picture. With nine graduated seniors, the Redhawk hockey team will be young, but that doesn’t affect the outlook on the season for head coach Patrick Griswold.

“Even though we’re younger, this is probably the deepest team we’ve had [in three years coaching at Minnehaha],” said Griswold. “Our expectations are very high. We can go a long way in the sections in February.”

A co-op relationship with DeLaSalle, St. Agnes and St. Croix Lutheran will help the team with depth and skill. The team also welcomes new assistant coach Nick Von Bokern, who played Division I hockey at the University of Nebraska-Omaha. The hockey sign-up numbers are up from 25 skaters, two years ago, to 37 adding to the positive view on the upcoming season.

“My expectations for this year is to grow as a team and get some good chemistry going with the guys,” said senior captain Luke Erickson. “I want these guys to be good for the next couple years, but I also want to have a good season.”

The Redhawks play their first game on Dec. 3 against Como Park.
